As COP26 draws to a close this week, the Conscious Advertising Network (CAN) rallied brands, advertisers and the climate community to sign an open letter calling on world leaders and technology platforms to take action against climate misinformation .
The open letter has more than 250 signatures to date, including Al Gore’s organization, The Climate Reality Project, Sky, British Gas, Virgin Media O2 and Ben and Jerry’s.
The open letter criticizes the accounts and pages of digital platforms that benefited from the ad spend, while producing and promoting climate disinformation during COP26.
Daily disinformation monitored by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) and more than 10 climate organizations at COP26 revealed that climate disinformation is rampant and that current measurements by technology platforms have failed to detect it.
To put it in perspective, recent research by Stop Funding Heat located 113 ads on Facebook with messages such as “climate change is a hoax” between January and October 2021, with an estimated spend of between $ 58,000 and $ 75,000. (£ 42,000 to £ 55,000).
Addressed to COP26 decision-makers and technology platforms, the letter calls for a universal definition of climate disinformation and disinformation.
It also demands that “action against climate disinformation / disinformation” be included in the negotiated outcome of COP26, and that technology platforms implement policies and enforcement of climate disinformation and disinformation that spread to content, algorithms and advertising.
He compares the policies to the robust work of Covid-19 that has been published over the past 18 months.
Jacob Dubbins, co-founder of CAN, said: âThere is no universally accepted definition of climate disinformation and disinformation, and most online platforms do not have policies of climate disinformation and disinformation. . Obviously, we need both to fight the disinformation that can seriously hold back the developments we are making to limit global warming to 1.5 ºC. We have seen disinformation conferences derailed before and it cannot happen again. Our planet and our lives are at stake.
